
Historic Church of the Resurrection
Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1936
The Historic Church of the Resurrection is both a Provincial and National Historic site in Dauphin, Manitoba. The Byzantine style was designed by Father Philip Ruh. The church construction began in 1936 and was completed in 1939. Later, in 1957, Theodore Baran completed the breathtaking iconography which covers every inch of the building.

What is Historic Church of the Resurrection?
Historic Church of the Resurrection is an impressive Historic Site located in Dauphin, MB. It was first dedicated as a provincial historic site in 1991. A few years later in 1998, the church gained national recognition. The church is known as one of four, of Father Philip Ruh’s prairie cathedrals. Currently, there are only two prairie cathedrals that remain standing. Our Preservation Committee carries the story of the Historic Church through grants and gratefully accepted donations. Tours are held throughout the summer, and can be booked throughout the year by contacting a member of the preservation committee!

No matter how long you stay at the Historic Church of the Resurrection, there’s always a new detail to be spotted. On a tour, a guide will take you through the years. You will learn how Philip Ruh struggled to be accepted by Ukrainians and how volunteers from around the community came together to complete this magnificent building. You will learn how Theodore Baran painted the interior and the meaning behind each individual icon! Finally, you will learn about the long journey the chandelier had, coming all the way from Czechoslovakia.

The Ukrainians
There’s so much to see at Historic Church of the Resurrection! Learn about the pioneer Ukrainians and the journey from the old country! As many of the Ukrainians were illiterate, the church tells the story of the bible through icons. Look for small details through out the church that symbolize Ukraine, such as the coat of arms, the yellow and blue colours and the sunflowers!

Icons
Ukrainian Catholics worship through icons. This church is an excellent display of that. With the bright colours and fine details, you will find yourself speechless. The arches, as well as the walls and ceiling are covered in such a rare form of art.
